The Battle Against Moss: Washington's Ultimate Roof Enemy
If you live in Federal Way, Seattle, or Tacoma, you've likely seen green, fuzzy moss creeping across local rooftops. The Pacific Northwestโs damp, shaded environment provides the perfect breeding ground for moss, algae, and lichens. Left untreated, moss acts like a sponge, holding moisture against shingles, backing water under the roof deck, and causing premature rot, leaks, and structural wood damage.
At Emerald Sunrise Roofing, we see the damage moss can cause every day. Fortunately, there are several highly effective ways to protect your roof and prolong its lifespan.
How Moss Destroys Your Shingles
Moss begins as tiny spores blown by the wind. When they land on a damp roofโparticularly on the shaded north-facing slopes or under overhanging treesโthey root in the spaces between shingles. As the moss grows, it lifts the shingles, breaking the watertight seal. During rainstorms, water is funneled under the lifted shingles, directly onto the underlayment, leading to roof leaks. In severe cases, the roof structure rot becomes so extensive that a complete roof replacement is the only solution. If you think your roof has reached this point, consult our roof replacement cost guide for pricing information.
4 Ways to Prevent Moss Growth
- 1. Install Zinc or Copper Strips โ This is the most effective preventative measure. Installing 2-to-3-inch metal strips near the ridge lines of your roof allows rain to wash over the metal, releasing zinc or copper ions. These ions act as a natural, safe herbicide that prevents moss, mold, and algae from taking root.
- 2. Keep Trees Trimmed โ Shaded roofs dry out much slower. Trim tree branches at least 10 feet away from your roof line. This increases sunlight exposure, improves airflow, and prevents leaves and organic debris from accumulating on your shingles.
- 3. Maintain Your Gutter System โ Blocked gutters hold moisture near the roof edges, accelerating algae and moss growth along the eaves. Clean your gutters at least twice a year. For premium water routing, view our gutter installation services.
- 4. Choose Moss-Resistant Roofing Materials โ When replacing your roof, choose shingles coated with copper granules (such as algae-resistant architectural shingles) or consider switching to a metal roof, which is naturally impervious to moss. Check out our material comparison guide to compare asphalt shingles vs. metal roofing.
โ ๏ธ WARNING: Never Pressure Wash Your Shingles!
High-pressure washing blasts away the protective asphalt granules on your shingles, instantly cutting their lifespan in half and voiding your warranty. Always use a gentle, low-pressure soft-wash method with a biodegradable chemical treatment to kill moss spores at the root.
Schedule a Professional Inspection
Regular maintenance is the key to protecting your investment. If you suspect moss has already penetrated under your shingles, have a professional roofer assess the damage before winter. Learn more on our roof inspection service page to schedule a detailed assessment.
